Matrimonio pactado

A veces incluso incomprensible.

Arranged marriage
Today I would like to share with you the Arranged Marriage topic.
Here, in the Middle East, as well as in many other countries like India, for example, arranged marriages are a common fact in many many families. So I decided to ask about this subject to my collegues, who are definetely more in touch than I am to it. It is such an uncommon thing for me as it is for almost everybody else in Europe, America or Australasia in exception of the gipsy ethny, that I had to get information in order for me to have another and more realistic point of view.
Most relevant thing about it is that from both sides the advantage of arranging a marriage is that the families involved create a very strong connexion with each other so that they can become a well known clan. Marriage with someone from another nationality is something too open for most of them. Sometimes not even understandable.
So I will explain you step by step what I got to know about it. It might work differently depending on the country but I don't think that even matters.
In first place, there is an average "limit" of age in men of about 28 years old and 24 years old for women  to get married. By that time, the young man or the young lady should stablish a formal relationship with another person of the opposite sex.
Secondly, due to religion and cultural facts, sometimes arranged marriage is not an option but the way things work, so it can be sorted in two different ways. Either between well known families or through a broker, which on my understanding is like a go-between person in charge of single men and women, husbands and wifes to be. The first  option is the direct one: two families of the same range/class/caste deal with the marriage of their children because they know each other and have mutual interests in becoming a big family. The second option is the indirect one: one of the parts involved goes to a broker in order to find the proper husband/wife so they show albums of candidates to meet them afterwards and have a date between families up to three times. Let me make clear the "dating" point, which is basically a visit from the men and his family to her and her family in her house. If one of the parts does not wish to get married with the candidate they do not carry on "dating". In general, there has to be a mutual accord.
Third step is the engagement. Assuming that both parts share same religion they will go to the church/mosque/temple and make the appointment with the priest/imam/archaka to have a date set. When it comes to two different religions, I honestly don't know how it works.
Fourth and last, after about three weeks of church commitment from both sides the couple will celebrate the wedding, which usually takes between one and three days to be finalized depending on their traditions.
And so, they were happy ever after!
And that's all I got to say...I rest my case!
Have a nice sunny Sunday! :)

Gracias! :)

Mi tarta, ya son 24!

My happy birthday in UAE!
Yesterday was my birthday so I got to celebrate it with my collegues and with my family and friends only in the distance. But I felt really special and I appreciated all the wishes from everyone.
I blew candles up to three times and got many gifts and congratulations from all over the world, which is the most important: to know that I have you all around keeping track of my wanders. I just want to take this post in advantadge to thank you all or being there, because wherever it is that I am, you're still next to me and that makes me feel good!
Thank you!:)

Conflictos culturales

Cultural conflicts

Today I would like to share my rough thoughts with you. Mainly about the cultures conflict that anybody can face when moving to a new and very different country than your own.

When it comes to the Arabic countries, I have noticed many uncommon things for me since I am living here in the UAE. It does not mean that I do not respect them all, just the opposite. I follow whatever is written that it is not allowed or that needs to be done in a specific way other than my way...

But accomplishing what is supposed to be accomplished or follow what they tell you to follow does not make you feel any confortable or even ok ish with the situation.

I think it will be easier to understand with a couple of little examples. When it comes to relationships, everybody knows (I assume, in general) that for muslim people it is not allowed to hang out before the marriage, which means, they don’t know the meaning of boyfriend or girlfriend. It is not an option for them because there is nothing between boys and girls prior to a wedding.

So combining this with the fact that they do not show off any kind of affection between two human beings, the rule is: it is not allowed to show off in public any kind of affection. And then it comes my thoughts and feelings behind this prohibition. How good it makes you feel to be able to hang hands with your couple when you go out or how usual it is for us (I understand “europeans” and non-specific religious people) to kiss after saying, for instance, see you later. All those little moments make such a difference only when you miss them so much...and right now, I do realize of the fact that I am not able to express my love unless it is in closed doors.

I will give another example, when it comes to sharing ideas or developing management skills, in such an environment like this, being a woman, it is not easy to take credit from your collegues. Why? Because in their culture, woman are not that much in high positions and they still need to learn to respect that and understand that women are also allowed to give answers, discuss things and show off their qualities other than keep their mouth shut.

So, to sum up, this is just a small picture of the issues every now and then I face either at work or in public in this country. It is a reflection of my point of view, not an argument about whether it is good or bad, better or worst because when it comes to cultures the basis is respect and tolerance. Of course you can choose to live with it or to take the door and go back home, where you will always be recieving with open arms. But, obviusly, it is shocking and even difficult sometimes to adapt. Always keep in mind, though, that wherever you are in the world, the most important thing you have to do to coexist is to respect and be tolerant with their traditions and their way of doing.

See you soon! ;)

Last week
Hello everyone,
Today I inform you shortly about my last week, when I was quite disconnected and demotivated at the same time. True is I didn't have a very good week regarding to work, as sometimes we have to look forward and not just at the present. I had to react and see that still there's a lot to do, that is what I came for, and see that I have to take a more positive atittude towards what life is offering me here and now.
Today I was off and, despite the fact that I spent some time at the hotel to prepare some stuff, I could manage to go to the hairdresser in the morning and go out for drinks in the night with my colleagues. After a good day I can go back to work tomorrow morning with my batteries charges for more and better.
Now I attach the pictures of the place where I have been today.

Staff party
Hi again,
last Sunday evening we had the staff party celebration after over a couple of years of lack. I was there and I enjoyed quite a bit actually. We had food, drinks, presents, speeches, laughs, songs, dance...So I dressed myself up for the occasion and I had fun together with my colleagues.
Here I show you some of what was there...:)
